The Mom I Acquired

Donna   I was fortunate to “acquire” an amazing mom when my dad remarried in 1985.  My mom, Donna, has been a source of inspiration to me since I was 30 years old in times of joy and sadness; and she has been a wonderful grandmother to my boys as well.  My father sadly passed at age 64 and Donna was only 55.  Having lost a husband myself when I was that exact age, I now fully understand how young that is and how daunting it is to have your life uprooted in the blink of an eye.  Although Donna never remarried, she has remained vital, fun, and fully engaged in the business of living.

As a young woman, Donna was one of the original Weeki Wachee Mermaids and later produced and starred in her own underwater mermaid show.  Divorced at an early age, she took her show on the road with young twins and figured out how to survive and thrive on her talents and determination.  She has aged as gracefully as she has lived and is always concerned about the needs of her kids, grandkids, and CATS!  She is devoted to saving felines of every shape, size, and temperament as well as other “displaced” animals.  She is barely five feet in stature, but her heart is the size of Texas.

During this month when we honor our mothers and mother figures, I’m especially grateful to my dad for bringing this amazing woman into my life and to Donna herself for being such a shining example of love to me and to our family.
